Molehills (mole hills) and mole ridges can ruin the appearance of your lawns and flower beds, and their tunnels damage the roots of young plants, flowers and vegetables.
Garden Moles are neither pests nor vermin unlike rats and mice but are considered to be an agricultural pest. In other countries such as Germany, they are a protected species but may be killed if a permit is obtained. In the UK in 2006 there were estimated to be in excess of 31 million moles. Strychnine was banned at the end of 2006, since which time their numbers have been on the increase, as are traditional Mole catchers.

Problems cited as caused by moles include
contamination of silage with soil particles making it unpalatable to livestock, the covering of pasture with fresh soil reducing its size and yield, damage to agricultural machinery by the exposure of stones, damage to young plants through disturbance of the soil, weed invasion of pasture through exposure of fresh tilled soil, and damage to drainage systems and watercourses. Other species such as weasels and voles may use mole tunnels to gain access to enclosed areas or plant roots.
Moles burrow in lawns, raising molehills, and killing the lawn, for which they are sometimes considered pests. They can undermine plant roots, indirectly causing damage or death. Contrary to popular belief, moles do not eat plant roots. Lawn mole control is essential to stop the tunnels and molehills from killing the grass.
Moles are believed to operate 4 hour shifts, working for four hours and then sleeping for four hours. During their waking time they will patrol their tunnels for earth worms, insects and grubs. They need on average
20 worms a day to survive.
Molehills are waste material from digging or repairing burrows, and so are usually found where the animal is establishing new burrows, or where existing ones are damaged (for example by the weight of grazing livestock). Where moles burrow beneath the roots of trees or shrubs, the roots support the tunnel, and molehills are less common, and so even a dense population of the animals may be inconspicuous in these places.
